Reiki is based on the idea that there is a universal "life force energy" flowing through each of us that makes us alive and who we are. The word Reiki (pronounced Ray-Kee) is made up of two Japanese words: Rei "Universal Energy" and Ki- "Personal Energy."
Erica Shaffer (pictured left), a Reiki Master and shamanic practitioner in Central PA, says, “The intention of Reiki is to send love and healing through your hands to the other person… that’s what it does, love and healing.” Scroll down to watch the video.
To Erica, physical + mental = spiritual. “So if you’re mentally collecting things you don’t need to be carrying, that’s when your back starts hurting, your jaw starts hurting, and you start to manifest physical things because of that mental baggage.”
If a person’s "life force energy" is out of balance, they are more likely to get sick or feel stress. Erica says about her role as a Reiki Master, “It is my intention to come through each chakra and encourage you to release what you’re holding there.” Erica adds, “My main goal is to get people to realize that they have the ability to release. It’s not me doing it, it’s you deciding and choosing to let go of things.”
If a person is able to release the stress they are carrying through Reiki, they are more likely to be happy, healthy, and move forward in a positive way.
“I know that people who are going through cancer carry a lot of fear and worry. And, they worry about the people in their world. And, it’s a whole lot of weight on a person” Erica says. She knows this firsthand as her own mother battled cancer. Many cancer patients and their caregivers have worked with Erica and have benefitted from Reiki. She says that’s it’s something they can get that isn’t a pill or needle. “It’s something that doesn’t make you sick before you can feel better… they immediately start to feel better. You’re in a safe place, you feel loved, and love is the healer. Love is the answer always.”
And, Erica highlights that Reiki also relieves a lot of the stress that a caregiver may experience caring for a cancer patient. “It helps to pull that fear off and that worry so that you can be stronger for them.”
Anyone can get Reiki. Reiki can be a spiritual experience for some, but it is not associated with any religion and you don’t have be religious to benefit from Reiki. Many people feel that they can truly relax during Reiki as Reiki is conducted fully clothed. And about it’s benefits Erica says, “Everybody gets something different out of this but everybody seems to leave relaxed. Whatever it is that happens, it’s a reset button.”
As Erica offers limited sessions of Reiki herself, she highly recommends Reiki by Rickiein Harrisburg if you’re interested in setting up an appointment to try Reiki yourself.
